New Tactics Ogre Trailer!

by Adam Biessener on Oct 01, 2010 at 10:13 AM

Has it been explained to you why this PSP strategy/RPG should be at the top of your wish list? Because if not, this video and I are here to help.

Made by the team that was eventually bought out by Squaresoft to make the timeless Final Fantasy Tactics, the original Tactics Ogre (for Super Famicom in Japan and PSone here) is superior to that spiritual sequel in many ways. The battles are challenging without punishing players, and doesn't break down once you start exploring job/ability/equipment combinations (dual-wielding knightswords, ell-oh-ell). The story offers real moral dilemmas and tough choices that have consequences. The plot is not incomprehensible gibberish.

But the main point is that the battles are sweet tactical engagements the like of which we didn't see a worthy successor to until Valkyria Chronicles – which I love – but I'd even put Tactics Ogre above that excellent title from a pure strategy gameplay perspective.

Anyway, the overarching issue here is that there's this new trailer for the upcoming PSP remake (which is being done by much of the original team, incidentally), and you should watch it. And then you should think about how not having played the original makes you a bad person. And then you should make plans to play this remake since it improves on the base game in several ways: remixed music, upgraded visuals, and a Wheel of Fortune system that we don't know anything about but is intended to add replay value.

Really, Tactics Ogre is that good. The written tongue-bath that I just gave it up there is zero percent hyperbole. It's one of my top ten games of all time. The remake looks awesome. Get on board.
