Spellbinding Combat
Despite its focus on morality and its consequences, I most associate the Fable games with their dry, sarcastic humor and exaggerated caricatures. However, the series’ dark moments, like slaying a family member to claim a legendary sword or choosing between resurrecting your pet or thousands of innocent people, are equally important to the formula. Fable has always balanced whimsy with tension, and the upcoming entry seems no different.
“You think about the fairy tale part of the tone that we have in the Fable games. That’s got a lot of lightheartedness to it, but it’s also capable of contrast,” associate game director Will Kennedy says. “And we actually think that whenever you get that dark contrast, it’s all the more powerful for it when you see it against the lighthearted side of a fairytale.”
I recently played a combat-focused demo at Gamescom 2026 set in one of Albion’s dark marshlands overrun with revivified skeletons, called Hollow Folk, and ghastly wraiths. It starts as we meet Humphry, a recently unretired hero who’s taken the protagonist under his wing, along the road to a nearby mine they’ve been tasked with clearing out. Very quickly, the aforementioned monsters appear, and my first combat sequence is underway.
