At PAX last summer, I had the opportunity to try my hand at Yager’s upcoming take on space combat. Dreadnought isn’t the speedy, snub fighter dogfighting game you’re used to. The ships are much bigger, and so are the explosions.

The game has progressed since last we played, and the team is showing off new ships and a new map. The five-on-five gameplay has a more methodical feel to it. You still need to think on your feet, but you also need to plan your engagements more carefully.

Getting caught in the open can’t be remedied easily, especially if you are playing as a larger vessel. And even if you can zip behind cover as a small craft, you might be out of position to assist your team (or simply vulnerable due to weaker shielding).

You can check out the new developer walkthrough above. For more, you can read up in our preview from PAX.

Dreadnought will be free-to-play and is scheduled for release in 2015.
