We enjoyed our time with combat racer Split/Second, but the title's floundering success led publisher Disney Interactive to layoff a large portion of the game’s development house, Black Rock Studio. Fortunately, many of the developers from Black Rock have skipped across town and formed a new studio, ShortRound Games.

Gamasutra, reporting on a GamesIndustry story, detailed how veterans from the Split/Second and Burnout series formed the studio in August of last year, and are now busy working on touch screen-based games, possibly for the iPad and PlayStation Vita.

ShortRound’s game director Andrew Hubbard told GamesIndustry, "We've just been made redundant from Black Rock which has given us a great opportunity to achieve what we all came into this industry to do; make games that we want to play and in the way that we want to make them."

Last month a few other developers from Black Rock formed Roundcube Entertainment. We wish the new teams all the best, and look forward to seeing what they can do on a smaller, independent studio budgets.
