DICE Talks Tanks In Battlefield Expansion

by Meagan Marie on Oct 08, 2010 at 04:43 AM

In a Battlefield Blog dubbed “Vietnam Hardware,” DICE and EA talk tech in the upcoming Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam expansion.

Taking a look at tanks this week, DICE revealed that both the North Vietnamese and US Army are getting their own armored vehicle. DICE explains that the functionality of each tank is similar to the core game, in that they are operated with a driver, gunner, and optional third soldier to man the machine gun. If the driver has the appropriate vehicle specialization, he can also use a secondary weapon from within. DICE explains that the lack of anti-aircraft guns on the North Vietnamese side makes tanks all the more important in air defense.

For American troops, the 60s themed radio stations are highlighted, but DICE includes a warning that enemy forces can hear your tunes, too.

Tank warfare in Vietnam will force troops close to the behemoth vehicles, more so than in the core game. Lead Designer Niklas Fegraeus explains that the lower tech weaponry of the period requires as much. “There are no fixed anti-tank weapons or tracer darts here, so there is generally more enemy infantry in close proximity of the tanks, trying to take it down with dynamite or unguided RPG's,” explains Fegraeus. “It's kind of a theme in this expansion, I think. The battle is more up close and personal in general.”
