Yesterday's Nintendo Direct had everything we've come to expect from the iconic livestreams – complete with game reveals, new trailers, and shadow drops – but it ended on a note no one was expecting. The legendary Miyamoto himself came on screen to present a new product called the Nintendo Today app, which the company will be using to make major announcements going forward. Less than 24 hours later, the app lived up to that promise, revealing the release date for the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie.
The film was announced back in 2023 with a tweet from the Nintendo account. It will be directed by Wes Ball (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), produced by Avi Arad (Uncharted, Spider-Man 2), and distributed in theaters by Sony Pictures Entertainment. Now we also know that the movie will premiere internationally on March 26, 2027, just under two years from the time of writing.
That's all the information currently available, however, so it's safe to say the film is still in the earliest stages of development. Nintendo is undoubtedly hoping to recreate the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed over $1.3 billion at the box office in 2023 and has a sequel in the works.
If you're interested in downloading the surprising source of today's news, you can grab the Nintendo Today app on the App Store and the Google Play Store. For more on yesterday's Nintendo Direct, check out our recap of the event.
