The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King™ Trick-Taking Game picks up where the previous iteration left off, with Gandalf and Pippin going to Minas Tirith, Aragorn taking the Grey Company down the Paths of the Dead and Theoden and Merry racing to help Gondor. Superbly mirroring the narrative structure of the books, here players edge ever closer to the Black Gates of Mordor as they earn tricks to fulfil their respective roles in groups across the chapters. If you do well and cooperate, you’ll destroy The One Ring, saving the peoples of Middle-earth™. But if you fail, it’s the servants of The Shadow that will earn the glory.

Superbly mirroring the narrative structure of the books, here players edge ever closer to the Black Gates of Mordor as they earn tricks to fulfill their respective roles in groups across chapters. If you do well and cooperate, you’ll destroy The One Ring, saving the peoples of Middle-earth. But if you fail, it’s the servants of The Shadow that will earn the glory.

It all starts with character selection, which evolves as you work your way through the chapters. The mighty warriors you embody, whether they be Hobbits, Elves, a Dwarf, or Men, all have their own strengths and weaknesses to consider, and unique goals to strive for within the party. These profiles are cleverly crafted to allow players to step into the shoes of a number of Tolkien’s beloved literary icons on this peril-filled odyssey.

Beyond the appetizing anxiety of surviving scenarios, the tension lies in the fact that, with a limited deck and individual goals, you and your cohort need to silently negotiate who wins each trick to ensure everyone succeeds together. So, whether you’re a hairy-footed Hobbit or an elegant Elf, the overarching aim is to balance your own goals and needs with the group. This kind of collaborative gameplay not only replicates the camaraderie and friendship at the heart of Tolkien’s series but also immerses players in a plethora of enthralling fantasy scenarios.

A defining factor of the game is that players can’t talk about the details of the cards in their hands or share them with their teammates. Therefore, the success of The Fellowship hinges on the characters’ ability to trust one another, a dynamic that mirrors the core material. If one player is struggling to make themselves heard, the whole game chapter can take a turn for the worse. When paired with the approachability of the rules and the portability of the game itself, The Lord of the Rings Trick-Taking Games are a brilliant companions for road trips, holidays, and board game nights with friends and family.

Beyond the exhilarating, lore-accurate gameplay, what sets The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King Trick-Taking Game apart is its vivid, stained-glass art style. Illustrated by Elaine Ryan, each card features stunning portraits of characters like Beregond; Halbarad; Ghân-buri-Ghân; Faramir, Son of Denethor; Gandalf the White; and Gollum, of course. Sprawling locations have also undergone a vibrant transformation, with important vistas across Middle-earth, such as the pastoral fields in front of Minas Tirith and the craggy edges of Mount Doom, shining thanks to this thematic style.
