Breaching A New Genre

Ubisoft released Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle in 2017, and in addition to the obviously head-turning fusion of these two video game series, it showed the world Ubisoft was more than capable of making a fun, unique tactics adventure. It begs the question, then: which other series could the publisher naturally add tactical turn-based combat to (other than Ghost Recon, which got a tactics game for 3DS in 2011)? The answer was so obvious that I’m surprised it’s taken this long. Rainbow Six Tactics was revealed during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, and it looks fantastic.

Borrowing operators from Rainbow Six Siege, this new single-player adventure has players navigate a campaign of turn-based tactics gameplay, complete with all the gadgets and destructible environments you’d expect from the core games. The structure is a perfect fit: an ideal Siege match has teammates moving in sync to quickly eliminate the enemy team, so a tactics adaptation is a smooth translation of that concept.
