No Law
Neon Giant’s first game, The Ascent, had all the trappings of a cyberpunk great for me, and despite loving its aesthetic, world-building, and score, the isometric shooting left me wanting something else. Now, the team is taking another crack at cyberpunk, and it looks set to satiate my desire from this team. It’s ironic, then, that its next game, No Law, is set in a city named Port Desire. Instead of isometric gameplay, Neon Giant is returning to the roots of its various developers’ careers to create a first-person shooter about an ex-military veteran named Grey Harker who just wants to live a life of peace… but can’t when something is taken from him.
No Law is about Harker’s mission to retrieve what’s been stolen from him and confront Port Desire, a city that wronged him. If the reveal trailer at The Game Awards in December is any indication, it looks like a bloody good time, literally. In a virtual preview of the game, I can’t help but ask Neon Giant co-founder and No Law creative director Tor Frick about the cyberpunk-themed elephant in the room: Cyberpunk 2077. He tells me he understands the comparisons but believes the aims of No Law differ.
