Grand Theft Auto VI
There is no reality where the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI isn’t a huge deal. It’s one of the most expensive games of all time, which is unsurprising, given that its predecessor, which has reportedly earned well over $8 billion in lifetime revenue, is the most profitable piece of media of all time. I’m excited for all the usual things one is excited about in an upcoming game – the gameplay, the story, etc. – but GTA VI isn’t just an upcoming game. It has the serious potential to be a cultural milestone and make a significant leap in gaming technology, and it’s rare to detect that so far in advance.
Rockstar’s impending project will return to Vice City, a Miami-inspired playground that first starred in its own 2002 game. The game’s dual protagonists, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, will lead a Bonnie and Clyde-style love story, as the two rob, commit the series’ titular crime, and evade the cops on the road to riches. Jason is an army vet who runs drugs for a man named Brian Heder, while Lucia is a fighter, fresh out of prison. Even just from the early trailers, their chemistry is very believable, and it will be a nice dynamic to add to the long-running series.
