The Slow Cook To Perfection

It was many years ago that we first caught early glimpses of Witchfire, the striking and unusual game under construction by the team that previously brought us The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Witchfire couldn’t be more different from that earlier release. Depending on who describes it, the game is either a Destiny-inspired shooter, a challenging soulslike, a progression-oriented roguelite, or an extraction-focused fantasy RPG. Play it, and you realize it’s likely a little bit of all those things, and that’s part of the magic. Suffice to say, the game’s been in development for a very long time, and the slow burn of creation has resulted in something unique.

“It wasn’t done on purpose, and we didn’t force it, but Witchfire is unlike any other first-person shooter out there,” says director Adrian Chmielarz. “We joke internally that it’s both a blessing and a curse. A blessing, because the game feels unique. A curse, because whenever we run into a design conundrum, we can’t even look at how other games solved it.”
