New Virtua Fighter Project
We may not have an official name, a full roster reveal, or anything resembling a launch window, but it’s tough not to be excited about a new Virtua Fighter. It’s been a whopping 20 years since Virtua Fighter 5 first hit arcades, and that game has become this generation’s Street Fighter II, sustaining the fanbase with updated re-releases until the next mainline entry arrived. After spending 2025 largely shrouded in mystery, here’s hoping 2026 yields more substantial information on this next entry.
Though it’s largely only been shown through teaser trailers and developer diary videos showcasing training bouts, we know the still-untitled new Virtua Fighter has new battle systems and match rules. You can win matches in the usual best two-out-of-three ruleset, now dubbed Standard, but a format called Uprising vaguely promises dynamic momentum-shifting opportunities “unique to Standard play,” according to Sega.
