If I heard the news about Fate of the Old Republic anywhere other than the stage of the Game Awards, I would not have believed it. The return of one of the most beloved Star Wars games of all time, directed by Casey Hudson (the original game’s director, who went on to lead the Mass Effect trilogy), sounds too good to be true, and yet, here we are. A woman in a white cloak walks alongside a bipedal droid and an alien with a long rifle towards an old, wrecked ship. Once inside, she stands before a circular doorway looking into a smoky orange room with some kind of large monster inside. The camera zooms in on her face, which is gorgeously rendered, and we see a stern look of determination illuminated by blue light and the unmistakable sound of a lightsaber igniting. From start to finish, it’s only 90 seconds of footage, but it establishes a sense of atmosphere and intrigue that will fuel speculation for years to come.
