Somewhere Between Life And Death

In Pera Coda, players control a character who is caught between the world of life and death, stuck in a recurring loop that will be familiar to anyone who has watched Groundhog Day or played The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Developer Elyzio describes the game as an emotional point-and-click adventure where you must confront your memories in a heightened version of Istanbul with elements of magical realism.

“Pera, in Turkish, means ‘the other shore,’” lead designer Cem Çelik tells me. “You can take that both in a literal sense and figurative sense. It’s the other side and the main character is stuck on the other side.” Coda will be somewhat more familiar to English speakers. “The coda is the part of a song that is played briefly after the song ends. Emotionally, it acts as the aftermath. It’s the aftermath on the other shore, in a sense. You can take it as the other shore of your mind, or your journey,” Çelik says when asked to explain the meaning of the game’s name.
