Words Outnumber Swords In Story-Driven RPG Launching May 21

When I met with Always Sometimes Monsters creator Justin Amirkhani at PAX 2013, he told me that, despite a fondness for playing action titles, his heart is in creating story-based games. When I got back to my room to play a build of his game, I could see his passions were put to good use.

Always Sometimes Monsters is unlike other games I’ve played, offering freedom and diversity of both characters and experiences in extremely ambitious ways. The title is built on an RPG engine, but developer Vagabond Dog has stripped away the stats and combat pieces, leaving a wholly narrative experience in an RPG shell.

Character "creation" is handled organically, allowing for many possible race, gender, and sexual orientation combinations. The short build I played left its mark on me, which is why I’m delighted it will be arriving soon.

Devolver Digital will be helping Amirkhani’s Vagabond Dog team release the title on May 21. You can read our preview from PAX for more.
