Multimedia Maturation
For a pipeline that was once critical and commercial poison, it is remarkable to see the transformation in fortunes of video game-to-movie adaptations at the global box office. In each of the last three years, video game adaptations have been among the top 10 highest-grossing movies: The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s dominant $1.3 billion box office success in 2023, Sonic the Hedgehog’s half-a-billion gross in 2024, and A Minecraft Movie’s $950 million haul last year.
Already in 2026, the Mario movie sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, has grossed over $1 billion. With new adaptations of Street Fighter and Resident Evil this year and The Legend of Zelda next year being just a few of the many gaming adaptations currently in development, the trend shows no sign of slowing down; all before discussing successes on smaller screens, with series like The Last of Us, Castlevania, and Devil May Cry lighting up streaming services.
