Invincible VS – A Superpowered Knockout
As I summon Mark Grayson, the young superhero known better to the world as Invincible, to clash with his incoming father, the mighty Omni-Man, the two share some biting words before their fists collide in combat. This initial contact from these two powerful beings reverberates into a shockwave, causing the city around them to shake and crumble as if a bomb detonated. The superpowered slugfest that follows is intense, frenetic, strategic, and, as a fan of the source materials, enjoyably faithful.
The pair trade blows, and I begin to lose ground, so I call upon Rex Splode, Mark’s hot-headed ally, to hop in and lob his supercharged explosives to keep the caped powerhouse at bay. Omni-Man’s partner and fellow Viltrumite, Thula, runs quick interference before Omni-Man bows out, allowing his unlikely ally, Atom Eve, to take over and rain down shards of pink energy on her ex-boyfriend, Rex. This battle of former lovers is tense, but ultimately ends the way it probably should: with Eve shredding Rex’s very molecules apart in an impressively gruesome display of her might. I summon the lumbering Monster Girl to take Rex’s place, but despite a valiant effort, I’m overwhelmed by the rapid tag-team combos of my adversary. Down she goes, and Mark, fittingly the last man standing, falls soon after.
When the bout concludes, I can feel my pulse has heightened, and a thin layer of sweat on my palms. I didn’t win; in fact, I had to witness my characters get smashed into chunks of flesh and blood-red mist. But instead of dwelling on defeat, I eagerly challenge my opponent to another round. Invincible VS is swooping into the tag-fighting scene full of promise, and we spoke with the minds behind the comics, the animated series, and the game to learn how they assembled their dream project.
