21 Years Of World Of Warcraft

A retrospective on Blizzard’s flagship MMORPG, ranging from its earliest days to its latest expansions

World of Warcraft is one of the most influential games of all time. Thereʼs little to debate about that fact; over 20 years after its initial explosive launch, it still has plenty of players populating its servers, discussing classes and builds online, and meeting up in-game to not just complete quests, but socialize. There are decades of lore, both within and outside the game, spanning books, comics, a live-action film, forum pages, wikis, urban legends, memes, and an Emmy-winning South Park episode.

The title has come a long way since release. From its successful launch to its historic peak in the early 2010s to its current three-expansion story arc, the story of World of Warcraft is an odyssey in and of itself. Despite all that success, however, the game has humble beginnings: it began with a project that never saw the light of day.
