When I ask Edmund McMillen, the acclaimed indie developer behind hits like Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Issac, why he’s so laser-focused on getting his next game, Mewgenics, across the finish line over a decade after its reveal, he answers with a confident declaration.

That conviction and enthusiasm prove infectious and make my nearly three-hour Discord call with McMillen and his development partner, Tyler Glaiel, fly by as we discuss the ins and outs of the long-awaited Mewgenics. Most of our conversation is laden with laughs as the pair gushes about the many comedic, bizarre, and outright ingenious elements of the surreal cat-breeding turn-based tactics roguelike.
