Within this recent renaissance of Marvel video games, we’ve seen open-world web-slingers, crossover beat ‘em ups, live-service competitive shooters, and even a team-up strategy deckbuilder. However, one genre in which Marvel has traditionally had a strong presence – fighting games – has been largely underserved in this era. Sure, Marvel Contest of Champions arrived on mobile devices in 2014 and is still going strong today, but Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite fell well short of expectations.
Since that 2017 release, Marvel fans haven’t had a triple-A fighting game outside of re-releases and collections. That changes next year with Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, a new game from the studio behind beloved titles like Dragon Ball FighterZ and Persona 4 Arena, as well as the Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, and Granblue Fantasy Versus franchises. We caught up with the developers behind Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls to learn how they’re leveraging the Marvel IP to deliver the fighting game fans have been waiting years for.
