Marvel Cosmic Invasion’s developers are using their encyclopedic knowledge of comics to revitalize the beat ’em up genre

When I ask Yannick Belzil to explain why he likes the Thor character Beta Ray Bill so much, I’m expecting a pretty basic answer – something about his powers or personality I can use as a brief quote in my article. Instead, he gives me the character's exact debut year, names the person who wrote the issue (Walt Simonson), and gives me a clearer understanding of this lesser-known comic book character than I’ve ever had before. Belzil is a hardcore Marvel fan. Given that he’s the narrative director for Marvel Cosmic Invasion, I’d say he’s in the right line of work.

The game in question is the next beat ‘em up from Tribute Games, a studio best known for its work on TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge back in 2022. The game was a modern take on the classic Turtles formula, and according to Tribute, it was a big enough success that the team caught the eye of the folks at Marvel Games, who agreed to collaborate on the superhero brawler set to come out later this year.
