Two Mediums, One Hobby
I recall many years ago when we were first considering devoting some space in Game Informer to the occasional board game recommendation. I justified the addition by suggesting that video gamers might appreciate a glimpse into this other hobby.
Years later, I’m pretty sure that was the wrong way to think about it.
I’ve come to believe that gaming has always been a single hobby that manifests in a lot of different settings, platforms, genres, and mediums. The idea that somebody who likes a great RTS on their PC wouldn’t also love a fantastic strategy board game is misguided. Likewise, I’ve yet to meet the dedicated player of games like The Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, or Mass Effect who, when introduced to a tabletop RPG like D&D, doesn’t immediately fit right in.
