Minecraft Switch Has Xbox Achievements

by Imran Khan on Apr 12, 2018 at 08:02 PM

While it has been known that using Minecraft's Better Together update would require Switch owners to make an Xbox Live account, apparently that account also allows access to a lot of what having an Xbox Live account entails, like Achievements.

The discovery was first found on Twitter by Patrick Maka, a youtuber and content creator, and by achievement tracking site TrueAchievements. Maka found an achievement list referring to the Switch version that was otherwise identical to the achievements found on Xbox systems and mobile platforms.

The achievements were later confirmed by Polygon.

“We can confirm that Minecraft players on Nintendo Switch will soon be able to earn achievements tied to Xbox Live once the Bedrock update is released,” a Minecraft spokesperson told Polygon.

The Bedrock update is a rolling update that brings all the platforms onto the same foundation and first started rolling out in September of last year.

Our Take
It's just an interesting little curiosity, but it's funny that Nintendo's first account-based achievement is courtesy of Microsoft. The trojan horse method of creating a higher MAU number for their services will probably work out fine for them.
