Weekend Warrior: Super Bowl Edition

by Jon Bowman on Feb 02, 2018 at 07:00 PM

It’s Super Bowl weekend, which means it’s a great time to have some friends over, open a few bags of Doritos, and show those friends why Yamcha is the best fighter in DBZ. Oh, and watch some commercials. With Shadow of the Colossus looming on the horizon, who’s ready for the weekend?

Javy Gwaltney (@HurdyIV) – There's going to be a lot of monster hunting this weekend for me as I seek to take down elder dragons in my 60+ hour playthrough of Monster Hunter: World...when I'm not finishing up the beautiful remaster of Shadow of the Colossus.

Matthew Kato (@MattKato) – one of the few people who isn’t playing Monster Hunter: World in the office (not for lack of trying – I just don’t have the dough right now!), I’ll be off by myself probably finishing off some Madden Ultimate Team solos, MLB The Show 18 Diamond Dynasty, and NHL 18 Hockey Ultimate Team. And more Assassin’s Creed Origins. Oddly enough, when it comes to Diamond Dynasty, I’ve been flipping cards on the marketplace more than playing the actual game recently. That’s not an indictment of the game itself, but rather an endorsement of the fact that the game has its auction house accessible via a browser. I don’t even know what I’m going to do with the stubs I’ve earned – but boy is it nice seeing your account double without doing much of anything!

Brian Shea (@BrianPShea This weekend, I’m hoping to finally get through Assassin’s Creed Origins. It’s been a long, fun journey, but I think I’m ready to put it behind me. Once that’s in the rear-view mirror, I’m going to dive into Monster Hunter: World, in addition to my other current projects of Final Fantasy X HD Remaster and Pokémon Omega Ruby.

Ben Hanson (@yozetty Man, this weekend is a tough call. I'm 10 colossi in to Shadow of the Colossus on PS4 and so I'm tempting to finish that one off. The struggle is that I also have Monster Hunter: World to get back into for the second part of our Game Club discussion. On top of everything, I also really want to get better at Dragon Ball FighterZ and go through that full story mode. Help me, internet!

Oh, and there's always Subnautica!

Robbie Key (@RobbieKeyV I often feel like the Internet Explorer of getting around to playing recent games. I just now started my first playthrough of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (even got the collector’s edition when it released). I’ve held off on playing it because I’ve wanted to go through the series again, but my time to play MGS V is way past due, and I can’t wait to continue it this weekend. Other than sneaking around in cardboard boxes, I’ll probably continue trying to fill my belly with chicken dinners in PUBG. Maybe I’ll try to watch the Super Bowl from the place I’m staying in Minneapolis.

Joey Thurmond (@DrJoeystein I had a few frustrating things come my way this week (such as losing two hours of writing with an online journal that was "saving" my work), so I'm going to blow off some steam by continuing my playthrough of the first God of War. With the dreadfully freezing weather in Minnesota the past few days, I'm also looking forward to enveloping myself in blankets and catching up with some books. Much tea and coffee will be had.

Jon Bowman (@MrGameAndWrite I’m planning on plowing through as many monsters as I can in Monster Hunter: World before Shadow of the Colossus comes out. I have a feeling that hunting down the Colossi will make me think twice about hunting down other monsters just so my Palico can have a new helmet. I’ll also play some Celeste during the Super Bowl while waiting for commercials.

Jen Vinson (@JenMarie_Vinson A tattoo consultation, D&D, and trying to avoid the city's Super Bowl chaos.

Andrew Reiner (@Andrew_Reiner– I’m catching up on comic books (Doomsday Clock, Metal, and Saga) and will dedicate all other free time to Monster Hunter: World. The game is ridiculously good, and has already become one of my favorite co-op experiences in gaming. I’m also told I need to see Paddington 2. People are talking it up like The Godfather or something.

Leo Vader (@leovader I’m the only one of my friends still holding out for PC Monster Hunter, so I’ll be playing Yakuza: Kiwami while I listen to how much fun they’re having in our discord channel and weep softly!

Daniel Tack (@dantack Cheese Danish

Kyle Hilliard (@kylemhilliard) – I am not a football guy, but I was prepared to pretend to be if the Vikings made it to the Super Bowl. But they didn’t, so I am going to do what I typically do during the Super Bowl, which is do a normal Sunday activity, and around 8 p.m. or so remember, “Oh yeah, the Super Bowl is happening. Neat.” Video game plans include maybe more Monster Hunter: World co-op with my wife. We set up side-by-side TVs, but I don’t think the game is particularly clicking with either of us. I want to play more of FighterZ’s story mode, too, and do more of Shadow of the Colossus’ time trials. I dabbled with the time trials in the past, but this is the first time I have been excited to try and do them all. With the normal ones all done, I am ready to move on to hard.
