The Last Jedi Director Explains How He Came To Helm A New Trilogy

by Imran Khan on Dec 04, 2017 at 02:20 PM

Rian Johnson, director of The Last Jedi and movies such as Looper, explains in an interview with Collider that the Star Wars party isn't one you just stop.

"But the idea for the new trilogy was completely separate; it just came because we were getting to the end of this process and kind of getting sad that we had to stop working," said Johnson. "But like Kathy [Kennedy] and all the folks at Disney, we were just like, ‘We’ve had a really good time. How do we keep this party going a little longer?’”

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, seemed eager to keep Johnson on.

Johnson presented a big idea with a simple pitch. “We were just generally talking about what could we do and I was like, ‘What would be most interesting to me is…’ and then I just said—it wasn’t even a specific pitch, the pitch was: ‘A new trilogy. Three movies, one story. New characters, new places. Let’s start fresh.’ That was the most exciting thing I could possibly think of and Kathy really responded to that and we’re gonna give it a shot.”

He also clarified that, while he is captaining the new trilogy, he might not necessarily be directing all three movies. While he has committed to writing and directing the first one, and planning the overall story, that is all he has committed to at this point and the entire process is still in flux.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the eighth episode of the Star Wars main series, releases in theaters on December 15 (under two weeks!).
