Nintendo World Championship Finals On October 7

by Imran Khan on Sep 27, 2017 at 07:03 PM

Nintendo has finished all the qualifying rounds for 2017's Nintendo World Championship and has finalized details for the, uh, finals.

On October 7 at Manhattan Center's Grand Ballroom New York, Nintendo will be hosting and live streaming the sixteen last contestants that qualified via Mario Kart 7, including 2015 Champion and professional speedrunner John Numbers. In addition to the sixteen qualifying contestants, eight hand-picked contestants made up of online personalities, speedrunners, and tournament players will be joining them. Two of the confirmed guests are Smash Bros. tournament player and actor Asa Butterfield (most well known for the starring role in Ender's Game) and WWE Superstar and former Raw Women's Champion Bayley.

The event,  hosted by Andrea Rene and football player Jordan Kent, is made up of multiple Nintendo games for the finalists to compete in, though Nintendo hasn't made it entirely clear what those games will be. They have, however, revealed that the recently released Metroid: Samus Returns on 3DS will be one of the games, presumably for players to speedrun some small part of the game.

While it is far from a guarantee, there is an expectation that Nintendo World Championships usually accompany new announcements, dating all the way back to The Wizard when Super Mario Bros. 3 was shown for the first time. In 2015, Nintendo used the event to unveil Metroid Prime: Federation Force's competitive Blastball mode, which was...less successful than Super Mario Bros. 3's reveal.

The livestream can be found on https://nwc.nintendo.com at 5:00 PM ET/2:00 PM PT on October 7.
