Twitch Announces New Desktop App

by Imran Khan on Aug 10, 2017 at 02:14 PM

Twitch has revealed a desktop app, appropriately called the Twitch Desktop App, that allows Twitch users to watch Twitch streams, mod in overlays, and more. Perhaps most crucially, the app also allows chat in both text and video varieties, posing as a direct competitor to established chat program Discord.

The app, which can be downloaded now from Twitch's website, allows users to keep up on their favorite streams, watch streams together in groups, and watch them offline after the fact. Of course, it also includes the Twitch monetization mechanics like subscriptions, emotes, and bits.

Twitch was purchased by Amazon in 2014 for $970 million.

Our Take
Competition is good for chat programs, but it remains to be seen how successful Twitch will be at taking away Discord's dedicated user base.
