Kingdom Hearts Unchained X Arrives This Week

by Mike Futter on Apr 04, 2016 at 11:36 AM

Square Enix has announced that the mobile installment in the Kingdom Hearts series, Unchained X (that’s the Greek letter “chi”), will be out this week. If you have an iOS or Android device, you’re all set.

Unchained X takes place prior to the Keyblade War, placing the game on the earlier end of Kingdom Hearts’ complicated narrative. Despite its seemingly disconnected story, it does connect to all three games featured in the upcoming Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue.

That game will include an HD remake of the 3DS’ Dream Drop Distance, Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth by Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage (starring Birth by Sleep’s Aqua), and Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover (a cinematic that tells a different side of the Unchained X story).

Unchained X is free-to-play in Japan, which likely means it will be in the west, too. It’s due out this Thursday, April 7.

Our Take
I’ve played most of the Kingdom Hearts games and have enjoyed many of them (sorry, 365/2 Days). I’m very much looking forward to Kingdom Hearts III, and I’ll give this a go. Provided the free-to-play implementation isn’t too oppressive, it might get to stay on my phone for more than a couple of days.
