Square Enix Is Working On An Online Mech Shooter-Meets-Strategy For PC Called Figureheads
Square Enix is going to be giving a different type of online PC game a try. The publisher has found success with two MMOs. Now it will try to replicate that with Figureheads, a robot shooter with strategy elements.
Figureheads is a free-to-play game, with matches for ten players (five-versus-five). The trailer available on the Square Enix's Japanese YouTube channel doesn't offer much by way of explanation.
The next update is coming on June 10. Hopefully at that point we'll have some more context for just what the publisher means by a "robot shooter x strategy." There's no word yet that this is coming to North America, but with Square Enix throwing an E3 party for a secret title that will be unveiled next week, we need to add this to the list of suspects.
Our Take
With two teams of five, I have to wonder if this is Square Enix's attempt at entering the MOBA genre. The publisher does have strategy experience with mechs (Front Mission), but I suspect that's not how they mean "strategy" in this case.
