Ex-Torchlight Devs Announce Space Swashbuckler Rebel Galaxy
Double Damage Games, a new studio started the co-founders of Torchlight developer Runic Games, has announced a new space combat game named Rebel Galaxy.
Rebel Galaxy bills itself as an "an action-packed, swashbuckling space opera", and seems to favor the rogue-ish, lightly comedic tone of the cult classic TV show Firefly. While the game has you having interactive conversations with a variety of sketchy interstellar characters, the emphasis -- at least based on this trailer -- seems to be on explosive space combat with large-scale, customizable ships.
For a small studio (Double Damage's own press release calls itself a "micro-studio"), this is a pretty ambitious project. Rebel Galaxy is bound for Steam and PlayStation 4, and there is not tentative release date at this time.
Our Take
One thing that continues to surprise me in the last few years is the scale of games that are being attempted by such small teams. The advances and prevalence in easy-to-use engine technology is really causing a revolution in game development.
