Metal Gear Rising Was Dead Before Going To Platinum

Raiden’s high-flying adventure made a splash this weekend when the VGA trailer leaked onto the internet. The cybernetic ninja action looks great, and we got a close look at the exciting slice-and-dice swordplay. After seeing the stunning trailer, it’s hard to believe that the project was secretly canceled.
According to Andriasang’s report on the Hideraji podcast, the original Metal Gear Rising dev team focused on making a game about cutting stuff up, but that was about it. It sounds like the team lost vision of what the driving force of the game would be. Kojima decided that the game would be cancelled.
Sometime after that, Platinum Games, the folks responsible for Vanquish, visited Kojima Productions. The developers expressed such interest in the game that they began taking production over.
While Platinum describes the cutting-based gameplay as being so good “you could die,” they are making changes to the story. The original plan was to use the story Kojima Productions came up with, but the narrative is being redone.
