Battlefield 3 Vs. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – Critics Respond

by Jim Reilly on Nov 09, 2011 at 07:15 AM

One of gaming's biggest showdowns this fall has come to an end.

For the past year, Activision and Electronic Arts traded blows over which publisher would have the better shooter. Who came out on top between Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3? We've compared ten of the top game reviews for the Xbox 360 versions for both games to one another from the same outlet.

Below is a graph providing a break down of the results as well as some choice excerpts:

Game Informer - Battlefield 3

Battlefield fans hoping for the most polished entry in the series won’t be disappointed by this massive sequel. Multiplayer maintains the high level of quality DICE is known for, and the campaign is the best in franchise history.

Computer and Video Games - Battlefield 3

Taken as individual pieces, only Battlefield 3's regular multiplayer is really strong. The co-op and story are both perfectly well executed, but lack true greatness. So, that third elephant: is Battlefield 3 really better than Call of Duty? It's a matter of personal taste, but for us Battlefield 3's incredible multiplayer edges this ahead of it's accomplished rival.

IGN - Modern Warfare 3

The multiplayer is hands-down the best it has ever been, with more features, more modes and a ton of new levels and ways to interact via Call of Duty Elite. The singleplayer campaign and Spec Ops mode add value to the overall package, creating something that may not be perfect, but is too addicting to pass up.

GamePro - Battlefield 3

A sloppy single-player campaign met with matchless multiplayer makes for an unbalanced first-person shooter experience.

Joystiq - Modern Warfare 3

Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer is some of the series' strongest, and the co-op offerings have been expanded tenfold. But the campaign will leave you yearning, wishing that the characters were differentiated by more than thick accents, or that the gameplay tried something more than aim, shoot, take cover, reload, rinse and repeat.
