Twisted Metal Scraps Teen Rating, Goes For Mature

by Tim Turi on Jul 24, 2011 at 10:05 AM

It may come as little surprise that a game which allows you to drag a psychotic clown behind a motorcycle across the pavement, load him into a nuke, and launch him into space would get a mature rating. Up until the San Diego Comic-Con 2011, creator David Jaffe and his team were gunning for a teen rating in order to reach a broader audience. Now the development team at Eat, Sleep, Play is embracing the mature rating.

"Without blood, it felt a little weird, frankly," said Jaffe regarding transitioning into an m-rated for the PS3-exclusive game. Attendees of the panel were treated to a sneak peek at the intro video of Sweet Tooth, the series' iconic killer clown. The video focuses on a transistor radio which is tuned to a radio show that specializes in conspiracy theories. One caller says they think Calypso is hosting another Twisted Metal tournament. Blood pools around the radio and a woman falls dead, and the camera pans up to show Sweet Tooth standing there. It's then revealed that the clown is after "the one who got away," a girl who stabbed him in the eye and escaped her death. Winning first place in Twisted Metal could grant him his wish for revenge.

I loved Twisted Metal Black, and I was a little worried upon hearing that the game was slated to have a teen rating. I've played the game and absolutely loved it, and now that it has an m-rating stamped to it, I'm confident it will be the entertaining, gory romp it was destined to be.
