Urban Champions Getting The 3D Treatment On 3DS

by Tim Turi on Jul 06, 2011 at 07:25 AM

When the 3DS’ eShop opened up on June 7, gamers were treated to a free 3D version of NES classic Excitebike. The 3D Classics iteration of Excitebike takes advantage of glasses-free 3D to deliver sprites with depth. Japan already has a 3D Classic versions of arcade shooter Xevious, which we’ve yet to receive. Now Japanese 3DS owners are getting another three-dimensional throwback with Urban Champions.

The 2D fighter will shift from flat pixels to a slightly isometric view. The downloadable title will also support local multiplayer so your friends can pummel the crap out of you. Again. The game will be available July 13 for ¥600, which converts to $7.40.

While I appreciate receiving more 3D Classics, I’m left wondering why Nintendo is holding off with its big titles. Most 3DS owners would probably like to play Super Mario Bros. 3 or Metroid in this style. Heck, Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! could be really fun with 3D effects. We’re waiting, Nintendo.
