Gearbox's Randy Pitchford Says Gamers Should Support Sony

by Phil Kollar on May 13, 2011 at 08:14 AM

In the wake of the recent security breach of the PlayStation Network, a lot of anger and ridicule has been sent in Sony's direction for not handling the situation well enough or not having good enough security measures in place. I fully admit to being part of that myself. But Gearbox president Randy Pitchford says gamers need to step back and support Sony in response to the "evil" PSN hackers.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Pitchford said that all PSN-using gamers as well as Sony themselves are "victims of cyber-terrorism." He explained:

"We should all be rallying our support, hating the terrorists, wishing to dismantle that problem, because that could strike at any time and disrupt our fun and disrupt our way of life as gamers.... It's the first time we've experienced it in the games industry and I think we're failing in how we respond to it. Everyone who is attacking Sony right now is failing. We need to attack cyber-terrorists."

Pitchford said he's worried that other hackers could look at the reaction against Sony and become inspired for future attacks, when instead, "We need to stomp this s**t out and kill it."

Do you agree with Pitchford that we should be supporting Sony in this troublesome time, or does the corporate giant have to carry some of the weight of blame for this attack?
