Rare Thinks Kinect Has Big Potential
The makers of Kinect Sports feel that they've only tapped "10-15 percent" of the Kinect's capabilities. So what's next?
Rare's Nick Burton had a lot of glowing things to share about working on Kinect as he spoke recently at London's Institute for Contemporary Arts. He talked about the unique challenges and opportunities presented by working with Kinect, including a number of details regarding the making of Kinect Sports, which recently won a prestigious BAFTA award for best family game.
Most significantly, Burton claims that Rare has only utilized "10 to 15 percent" of the Kinect's capabilities. In the future, he hopes to take greater advantage of some of Kinect's more complicated features, including 3D infrared depth reading, tracking multiple points on the body, and online connectivity options.
It will be interesting to see what Rare does with the Kinect technology in the coming years. Up to now, Microsoft has failed to make the case that Kinect can be a viable gaming platform for more involved gamers. However, if Rare's thoughts on the matter are any indication, perhaps that could change in the future.
