Dragon Quest IX: So Many Units

Considering that the latest entry in this classic RPG series has shipped over 5.3 million units worldwide, it seems likely that just about every RPG fan with a DS picked up Dragon Quest IX. In fact, that figure is probably even a little low, since it only reflects shipments through the end of 2010.

Square Enix announced the impressive numbers for the game today – though it's important to note that this refers to units shipped to retailers, not units sold to customers. However, considering that store shelves aren't congested with millions of copies of the game, people must be buying it, too.

Dragon Quest IX is the first numbered entry in the series to release on a handheld platform, a risk that paid off big for Square Enix. Not only is DQ IX the best selling entry in the long-running franchise, it also pushed the series' total units shipped above 57 million. That's a lot of dragon questing.
