Gameloft's CEO Defends Ripping Off Other Games
Yesterday, we reported on a Capcom iPhone title that steals the entire concept and gameplay of 'Splosion Man wholesale. While it's disappointing to see such obvious plagiarism, at least it's not something Capcom does on a regular basis. Gameloft, on the other hand, has gleefully based much of their business model on ripping off established games. Gamers may look at their Hero of Sparta (God of War), Shadow Guardian (Uncharted 2), Modern Combat (Modern Warfare), N.O.V.A. (Halo), Starfront (Starcraft), and upcoming Zelda clone and shake their heads, but the company's CEO has no issue with their business practices.
In an interview with IGN, Michel Guillemot said "The video game industry has always played around a limited number of themes. There is maybe one new idea a year." He followed up on this rather pessimistic view of the industry by saying "If a type of game is not available, then you should make it. The damaging thing is if you do a bad expression of a good idea."
While it's true that God of War and Uncharted aren't available on the iPhone, it doesn't make the act of plagiarism any more respectable.
