One Of The World's First Video Games Playable In Its Original Form Once More
The image above is Tennis For Two. It was created in 1958 at New York's Brookhaven Lab by physicist William Higinbotham. This makes it one of the earliest examples of a video game ever created -- some have even argued that it's the very first. The original game was dismantled soon after its creation, but now it will be available to play in its original form again.
Wired has the full report on efforts from engineers working at Brookhaven to put together a recreation of the original Tennis For Two machine. A first attempt at doing this took place in 1997, but it was built on a solid-state computer, meaning it wasn't quite the same. For the new project, the team was able to obtain older hardware, putting together something almost identical to how Tennis For Two would have been played in 1958.
Brookhaven is currently waiting on an okay from its electrical safety inspector, but this early step toward the industry we now love should be up and running soon. In the mean time, check out the video below from Brookhaven to get the full history on Tennis For Two.
