Irrational Games Announces BioShock Infinite

by Joe Juba on Aug 12, 2010 at 08:00 AM

The studio that created the original BioShock is returning with the franchise's third entry, entitled BioShock Infinite. Instead of going back to Rapture, the game takes in the early 1900s in a city called Columbia. However, Columbia isn't an ordinary city – it's floating in the sky, and it's full of secrets.

At a reveal event in New York yesterday, Irrational Games made the surprising announcement that it was working on a brand new BioShock title. Since the studio conspicuously wasn't responsible for BioShock 2, many gamers assumed that the series had permanently passed out of its creators' hands. In fact, BioShock Infinite is what Irrational has been working on  since the release of BioShock in 2007.

The drastic change in location from an undersea utopia to an airborne metropolis required the studio to start from scratch; BioShock Infinite uses a brand new engine, and when approaching the game's design, Irrational decided that no aspect of the BioShock universe (like Little Sisters and Big Daddies) was sacred. Everything was potentially on the chopping block.

The result is a game that still deserves the BioShock name – it has powers, exploration, and a gripping narrative – but it explores new dynamics and themes instead of treading familiar ground.
