Red Dead Redemption Cleans Up In May NPDs [UPDATED]
UPDATE: The story has been updated with the top 20 games of May via NPD. Check it out below.
ORIGINAL STORY: Here's something I've been waiting for! The May NPD results for video game sales were delayed a bit this month (possibly due to E3), but they've finally arrived. It will come as a shock to few that the big winner from May is Rockstar's open world Western game, Red Dead Redemption. Check below for the full results.
NPD analyst Anita Frazier points out one positive trend this month: Eight of the top ten games were new releases (only seven by our count), meaning higher revenues overall. Red Dead and Super Mario Galaxy 2 were the biggest winners, grabbing the top three spots, but UFC 2010: Undisputed, Alan Wake, and Skate 3 for 360 also debuted in the top ten.
Due to the influx of new releases, none of April's debuts show up again this month, though Wii Fit Plus, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Pokemon Soulsilver are still hanging on from 2009. Here's the full list (note: NPD only provides sales numbers for the top five):
1. Red Dead Redemption (360) - Take 2 - 945,900 units sold
2. Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Take 2 - 567,100 units sold
3. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii) - Nintendo - 563,900 units sold
4. UFC 2010: Undisputed (360) - THQ - 221,100 units sold

6. Wii Fit Plus (with Balance Board) (Wii) - Nintendo
7. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii) - Nintendo
8. Alan Wake (360) - Microsoft
9. Pokemon Soulsilver (DS) - Nintendo
10. Skate 3 (360) - Electronic Arts
11. Lost Planet 2 (360) - Capcom
12. New Super Mario Bros. (DS) - Nintendo

Over on the hardware side, sales are...well, still not great. The Wii is up from last month, but really only enough to make up for the amount that the DS is down. The PS3 and 360, meanwhile, at are about the same amount as last month's disappointing numbers. Here's the dirt:
1. Nintendo DS - 383,700 units sold
2. Wii - 334,800 units sold
3. Xbox 360 - 194,600 units sold
