Original BioShock Hits 4 Million Sales

by Joe Juba on Mar 04, 2010 at 07:52 AM

Most of the talk about the BioShock series these days pertains to 2K Marin's sequel, which released on February 9th. However, the success of BioShock 2 has also caused a surge in sales of Irrational Games' original BioShock, which just hit a milestone by selling 4 million copies.

The achievement was revealed by Take Two CEO Ben Feder in a conference call: "We've seen an impact on our BioShock 1 catalogue as a result of BioShock 2. We're pleased with it." This is excellent news for Irrational, a studio whose pre-BioShock catalogue was defined by great games with less-than-great sales. Thankfully, BioShock proved that if you craft one of the defining games of the generation, people tend to buy it.

The announcement also bodes well for BioShock 2, which has shipped (but not yet sold) 3 million units. With this kind of success for both titles, BioShock 3 is almost certainly in our future...though a return to Rapture is likely a long way off.
