Gran Turismo Series Hits 55 Million Mark

by Matthew Kato on Feb 08, 2010 at 09:01 AM

There is no official release date for Gran Turismo 5 yet, but it looks like the game already has big shoes to fill. Developer Polyphony Digital has announced that the Gran Turismo franchise – to date – has sold over 55 million copies worldwide.

Taking a look at the sales list below, if history holds Gran Turismo 5 has a good chance of selling at least 9 million copies worldwide – assuming that the public's taste for sim-racing is as strong as it was when Gran Turismo 4 released in 2005 for the PS2. If sales of GT 5: Prologue is any indication, selling over 4.5 million units, then it looks like people are more than ready to see what full-featured sim-racing is like on the PlayStation 3. Even the shell-of-a-game that was Gran Turismo for PSP (head over to see our review) almost hit two million in sales.

How well do you think GT 5 will do when all is said and done?
