Actvision: DJ Hero Generated Most Cash Of 2009’s New IPs

by Tim Turi on Jan 19, 2010 at 08:40 AM

Last year we saw several exciting new IPs. Batman: Arkham Asylum wowed everyone, Borderlands was a sleeper hit, and Demon Souls reinvigorated hardcore game design. Out of all the new IPs of 2009, can you guess which was the most lucrative? According to Activision, it's DJ Hero.

Freestyle Game’s DJ Hero never broke into the NPD top 10. With this in mind, it may be initially hard to envision it as 2009’s highest grossing new IP. However, considering the game and turntable combo launched at $119.99 along with a special “Renegade” version selling at $199.99, it becomes clear how the game generated so much moolah. Plus, if the NPD says DJ Hero was the most lucrative, we should probably go ahead and believe them.

DJ Hero is reported to have sold roughly 350,000 units in the U.S. between the months of October and November, whereas Borderlands sold 2 million in all of 2009. The math seems a bit off, but with Activision offering different editions of the game at varying price points it gets a bit sticky.

"DJ Hero has transformed music gaming by marrying an innovative turntable controller and exhilarating gameplay with the biggest artists and incredible music from around the world," said Activision CEO Bobby Kotick.

"Consumers and critics agree that DJ Hero is one of the best music games ever created and further establishes Guitar Hero as the premier franchise of its kind."

We've contacted Activision for further information on their claims.

Do you agree with Mr. Kotick? Is DJ Hero the best music game ever created? Is it hard for you to believe DJ Hero netted the highest sales of any new IP in 2009?
