Jedi Teased In Star Wars: The Old Republic

by Adam Biessener on Oct 30, 2009 at 06:49 AM

We've been waiting for details on BioWare's take on Jedi Knights in its upcoming MMO while more mundane classes like Trooper and Smuggler got all the attention. The developer has finally put up some info on the class that 90 percent of their customers will be playing, and the news is...limited.

Unless you're dying to find out that the Jedi are warrior-monks dedicated to ideals of peace and serenity, you won't find much in the way of hard details in this release. Two tidbits were dropped, however, that shed a little bit of light on the Jedi's place within The Old Republic's fiction.

After the Treaty of Coruscant, which saw the galaxy divided into sectors controlled by the Republic and the Sith Empire, the Jedi have withdrawn to the remote planet of Tython. The order's reasons for this are unclear, and many Republic cognoscenti are openly critical of the move given the constant tension with the antagonistic Empire. How this will affect the plotline of player Jedi is unknown.

According to the official site, "Many Jedi Knights also wear parts or entire suits of heavy armor when going into battle." This implies that players will have more interesting options in gearing their Jedi than simply choosing an earth tone for their robe and color for their lightsaber. In an ideal world, this means more than, "Jedi Guardians wear armor because they tank, Jedi Sentinels wear light armor because they're hybrids, and Jedi Consular wear robes because they are spellcasters let their connection to the Force do the talking."

It says something that these tiny morsels of news are enough to get noticed. The Old Republic continues to look on track to be the Star Wars MMO we've always wanted (well, those of us who don't have dreams of making a virtual living by singing in a cantina. Go play Second Life already!).
