THQ Unveils Metro 2033
Game developers seem to have an affinity for certain things. Kraken bosses and game levels within the innards of behemoth beasts come to mind. Another reliable gaming standby? Post apocalyptic worlds.
Unfolding within this staple scenario, THQ unveiled their newest title early today, Metro 2033. The FPS title is based on a novel of the same name penned by on Dmitry Glukhovsky and takes place in the sprawling subway system of a post apocalyptic Moscow.
"Metro 2033 will plunge gamers into a terrifying vision of the future," said Richard Williams, vice president of global brand management, THQ. "4A Games have worked closely with Dmitry Glukhovsky to deliver a unique game world, a compelling, cinematic story and an incredible, atmospheric experience to rival anything in the category."
The novel, and subsequently the game, is set in the not-so-distant future (2013) when the world is annihilated by an undisclosed and cataclysmic event, forcing surviving humans to move underground in order to avoid the poisonous gas now permeating the surface. Described as a new Dark Age, survivors in the year 2033 know nothing of life on the surface. They are all too familiar with conflict, however, as their days are riddled with skirmishes between station-cities and mutated beings that patiently wait for them above.
You play as Artyom, raised underground although old enough to have breathed fresh air. You’re your task is to warn warring factions about a new threat looming just over the horizon.
Metro 2033 is also in negotiations for a feature film, so the PC and Xbox 360 endeavors may not be the last stop for the property. Metro 2033 is slated to hit retail in 2010.
No official screens or artwork have been released as of yet, but a trailer hosted on the official website is looking pretty polished. Check it out here.
