The Most Patriotic Games To Play On The Fourth

by Dan Ryckert on Jul 04, 2011 at 09:30 AM

July 4th is an awesome holiday, and it's a celebration of all things right with the greatest country in the world. If you're looking for a distinctly American-flavored game to play after a long day of eating BBQ, drinking beer, and blowing crap up, here's a look at the most red, white, and blue games out there. U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!

Call of Duty: Black Ops

While the bulk of Black Ops' campaign isn't always "RAH RAH AMURRICA!," there's a distinct moment at the end that should make apple pie-flavored tears well up in the eyes of our countrymen. Check out the part of the clip from 0:20-0:40 below to feel like you're sitting at the 50-yard line of the Super Bowl.

NFL Blitz

Speaking of the Super Bowl, we should all be thankful that we live in a country that appreciates real football instead of that stupid crap with the black-and-white ball that they play overseas. Any football game will do, but you'll want to go with NFL Blitz to get that true American feeling. Madden may have authentic player likenesses, a wealth of modes, and refined gameplay, but Midway's arcade classic lets you do elbow drops and atomic leg drops on fallen receivers. Play this with Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme blaring in the background for maximum effect.

Twisted Metal 2

Americans like cars and explosions, as evidenced by countless car-and-explosion-themed summer blockbusters. No game has ever captured wanton vehicular destruction better than 1996's Twisted Metal 2. Hell, you can even light the torch on the Statue of Liberty if you shoot a missile at it.

Red Dead Redemption

One of the most iconic images in American history is the cowboys of the old west. Attempts to capture a true cowboy tale have been made numerous times throughout gaming's history, but none completely nailed it until Red Dead Redemption. Rockstar's fantastic western is a classic American tale, even if it does dip into Mexico for several hours.

NASCAR The Game 2011

I've been told that Americans enjoy NASCAR events. This confuses me, as the very concept sounds unbelievably boring, and I've never met anyone that actually seems to enjoy the "sport" (do they call it a sport? If they do, they shouldn't). I'm assuming there's a certain demographic of the American public that actually does watch NASCAR, so the game sounds like a good fit for them.

Redneck Rampage

With follow-ups like Suckin' Grits On Route '66 and Redneck Deer Huntin', Redneck Rampage is distinctly American. However, it's probably not the most flattering of depictions. It's about two good ol' boys named Leonard and Bubba, and they protect the country (ok, maybe just their trailer park) from an alien invasion. For some reason, shoving dynamite into a chicken's ass is also part of the mission. If that's not enough to make it a solid July 4th pick, I don't know what is.

NARC

The idea of cleaning the streets of drugs and crime isn't an exclusively American pursuit, but NARC certainly is. It was spawned thanks to Ronald Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign, featuring the slogan at the beginning of the game. Regardless of your thoughts on The Gipper, I think we all have to thank him for giving us so many fun hours of murdering hobos with rockets.

Duke Nukem Forever

Yeah, so the game sorta sucks. Gameplay aside, however, this game is as American as it gets. Hell, just look at the image up there. Duke is the Hollywood version of the American hero - kicking ass, taking names, getting the hot chicks, cracking wise, and blowing **** up. He's probably not the greatest role model, but if there were ever a day to channel your inner Duke, it's July 4th.

Fugitive Hunter: War on Terror

SEAL Team Six must have been big fans of this PS2 title, as they perfectly re-enacted the final boss fight a few months ago. Fugitive Hunter is a terrible game, but it's the only one we know of that lets you become an American hero by taking out the country's (formerly) #1 most wanted.
