Stray Gods Developer Launches Kickstarter For Malys, A Roguelite Deckbuilder

by Charles Harte on Apr 02, 2025 at 04:00 PM

Summerfall Studios, known for its past work on the musical adventure Stray Gods, announced its newest project today. Malys is a roguelite deckbuilder with a demonic flair, following an exorcist named Noah on a mission to destroy the titular demon. Unlike Stray Gods, the studio is taking the crowd-funding route to bring the game across the finish line with a Kickstarter campaign. It won't officially launch for a few weeks, but the prelaunch link is live now.

Summerfall Studios explained its crowd-funded approach in the statement below.

Unlike many Kickstarters, we're not asking for funding to get started on the game and for you to receive it in two or three years. We want to work with you directly to reach 1.0 and get it in your hands within six months of the campaign launching. To achieve that goal, we need your backing, support and feedback. So few studios get to release a second game, and the second project is often the one that can provide studio stability and longevity. We need your help to make Malys a reality that can be another brick in the path of character driven, story focused, comprehensive single player experiences free of endless microtransactions and never-ending roadmaps.

Summerfall Studios was founded in 2018 by a small group of developers that includes David Gaider, known for his work as lead writer on the Dragon Age series. As expected, Gaider is writing for Malys as well, but the roguelite genre is not always narrative-forward, so we'll have to wait to see exactly how the story will be told. The announcement also came with two screenshots, but the game is still in development, so their contents are subject to change. The images, included below, depict the game's map and an exorcism, respectively.
