Is Epic Games Interested In APB's Corpse?

by Jeff Cork on Sep 17, 2010 at 04:03 AM

Just months after it launched, Realtime Worlds' MMO shooter APB is shutting down. If Eurogamer is right, however, this might not be the last time you hear from the ill-fated IP.

According to the site, a number of companies have expressed interest in purchasing the rights to APB, including a little independent studio called Epic Games. "Dave Jones and Epic is quite the talking point in town," said a Eurogamer source purportedly based in Dundee, Scotland, home of Realtime Worlds. "He and Mr. Rein [Mark Rein, Epic Games' vice president] are good chums and have worked together on many levels for years and years and years. And he's not going to raise much money/staff here in the near future."

When asked by the BBC about the rumors, a company spokesperson was strangely deflective. "Mark absolutely loves APB, and everyone here loved what they saw," said spokesperson Dana Cowley. "We've got our hands full of Gears of War 3, Bulletstorm and the recently announced Project Sword. If any talks like that are going on, then they would be confidential."

It's certainly an interesting turn of events. APB showed a lot of potential before its launch, with one of the deepest character customization systems we've seen. It's a shame that the shooting mechanics weren't as solid, since that was kind of a big part of the game.
