LucasArts Layoffs Confirmed, Possibly Extensive

by Phil Kollar on Sep 01, 2010 at 04:10 PM

Between various high-ranking individuals leaving the company and rumored future project cancellations, the pieces have been in place for something bad happening at LucasArts for a while. It appears today was the day for the bad news to hit. The publisher has confirmed staff cuts, and insider talk suggests that a lot of people were let go.

Kotaku has the official response from LucasArts, which says that the company is "reorganizing its teams to better address the needs of the internal studio." An unnamed former employer called the layoffs a "massacre," estimating that as many as 60 people were let go from the development team, with an additional 25 from production and QA out of the job.

The insider also noted that Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 went gold last week, meaning development work on it was entirely finished. This is traditionally the normal time for layoffs to happen, as the publisher can cut team members without affecting any projects that are near completion.
